Your Best Line of Defense against Dental Problems
Practicing good oral hygiene is one of the best ways to prevent dental problems that can be more serious is left untreated. Having routine dental hygiene treatments at Northern Dental & Hygiene Centre can be your best line of defense against several unpleasant oral conditions, including:
Practice Good Oral Hygiene in-between Visits
When you visit our office in Grande Prairie, one of our dental hygienists will thoroughly clean your teeth, removing harmful dental plaque and tartar build-up. We will also clean your gums, polish your teeth and administer fluoride treatments. However, cleanings are not enough. It’s recommended that you practice proper oral hygiene in-between visits, brushing and flossing multiple times daily.
Other things you can do in-between visits include cleaning your tongue daily to remove harmful bacteria, massaging your gums with your toothbrush, irrigating your mouth with an oral irrigator and eating foods rich in vitamin B and vitamin C (breads, cereals, fruits and vegetables) for healthy gums. Lean meats, including fish and poultry, can help preserve your teeth’s magnesium and zinc. Green teas can help you reduce bad breath and strengthen your tooth enamel due to their high fluoride content. Some things to avoid include caffeine, cigarettes and chewing tobacco.
Dental Exams & Check-Ups Are Essential
Northern Dental & Hygiene Centre offers both routine dental check-ups and comprehensive examinations for our patients in the Grande Prairie area. Both are essential to maintaining your overall dental health, but what should you expect during each?
What to Expect during a Comprehensive Exam
During a comprehensive examination, you can expect our dentist to thoroughly inspect your mouth, from the inside out, for signs indicating oral health problems. We’ll take a look at your head, neck, face, lips, salivary glands, temporomandibular jaw, lymph nodes, soft tissues and your overall bite. You can expect us to take x-rays to help us look for signs of decay (cavities), bone loss, advanced gum disease or other problems not initially seen during your exam.
What to Expect during a Dental Check-Up
During a dental check-up, you’ll likely see both our dentist and one of our dental hygienists, who will check, clean and polish your teeth and gums, while discussing proper dental care techniques for you to continue at home. If our dentist discovers any problems inside your mouth, we’ll go over necessary treatment options, further tests that may be required and specialist referrals in great length with you.
